It may be that this PL-X is in fact the final iteration of the PL-21.

From the developmental history and timeline (that table we all know of), it would make sense.

My guess is, ramjet has been tried and even prototypes launched, but in the end all ramjet-powered missile projects got changed in favor of dual-pulse+high arc trajectory instead.

But the PL-21 in the FC-31 is surely not the same missile !

This "beast" is simply too large and heavy for any weapons bay, including the J-20.

BY the way, I think the designation on these new long-range missiles is IMO so much vague that there seem to be several misunderstandings and contradictions.

In summary we have for future LRAAMs:

- the PL-XX1 spotted at first under a J-11B and lather J-10C and in the J-20's bay, which is often called the PL-15, even if IMO this is in fact more a further development of the PL-12 (even Huitong seems to be unsure and calls it PL-15 or PL-12G)
