Hi Huitong. I'm just curious; where did you hear that the PLAN was favoring the J-16 over JH-7B?
Wouldn't the J-15S make a lot more sense? The J-15S should already have the same type of avionics and airframe upgrades as the J-16, and it can operate from aircraft carriers as well. The J-15S could become the "J-16" of the PLAN, per se, and serve both on land and on vessels.
Just my 2 cents.

We have not heard of anything regarding JH-7B for a couple of years. In the meantime, J-16 is in production and starts to enter the service with PLAAF. Therefore the fate of JH-7B is in doubt. Since both its basic design and the engine are from 1960's technology, plus a series of fatal accidents JH-7A had suffered in the recent years, JH-7B seems no longer that attractive to PLAN. On the other hand, compared to J-15S, J-16 has been designed as a fighter bomber from the beginning and its design is one generation ahead of JH-7B. Therefore J-16 seems to be a better land-based naval strike fighter for PLAN. The only obstacle is the limited productivity of SAC, which has to fulfill PLAAF's order first.

The JH-7B will probably be exported, if possible. I personally don't think the J-15S is for training only. The PLAN has JL-9 for that as well as J-15 themselves. It will probably enter mass production as a multirole strike platform for YJ-12 and YJ-82K and adopt J-16's avionics (according to Feng's blog).

J-15S is most likely to be upgraded to have an EW version.

J-15S is most likely to be upgraded to have an EW version. Yes, agreed, but the baseline variant should be capable of strike (i.e. just as capable/advanced as J-16)? If the J-15S were a pure trainer, it should've entered service a long time ago (with the JL-9).

It is yet to see if J-15/15S can carry the bigger and heavier YJ-12

there's been a speculation that Chengdu lobby hard to convert JH-7B into EW "wild wiesel" AD suppression aircraft.for PLAAF and PLAN,but the image of J-16D show that PLAAF has select J-16 over JH-7.

Yes, it is increasingly likely that the JH-7 series is being considered "obsolete" by PLAAF/PLAN. It could be gradually phased out and replaced by the more modern J-16 series.
